Hon Justice Ingmar Taylor1
1President, NSW IR Court and Commission
Abstract:
This address examines how the Industrial Relations Commission of New South Wales—the world’s oldest continuing industrial tribunal—is keeping pace with the demands of a rapidly digitising justice system. Reflecting on its 124-year history of shaping foundational industrial standards, Justice Taylor explores the Commission’s recent reconstitution, expanded jurisdictions, and increases in workload. Against that backdrop, Justice Taylor will focus on the transformative role of technology in enhancing efficiency in tribunal proceedings, and the Commission’s use of technology to keep pace with its expanding jurisdictions. Drawing on practical examples, including the Commission’s first fully paperless and live-streamed major industrial arbitration, this address highlights the measurable gains in time and cost of effectively using technology, and gives an overview of the Commission’s forthcoming practice note which will give its parties clear guidance on its expectations for fully paperless hearings.
