Abstract

Many tribunals are constituted by multi-disciplinary panels, reflecting the value placed by the legislature on a broader range of perspectives and skills than those held by legal practitioners. In this session, Malcolm Schyvens, Chair of COAT National and President of the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal together will engage in discussion with a number of highly experienced members from a range of disciplines, including non-legal presiding Members, expert Members and community Members,  who will provide insights from years of decision-making on multi member panels, as well as ideas for nurturing excellence amongst this cohort. The session will consist of a brief presentation and then a panel discussion. This will be followed by a facilitated workshop where attendees will be grouped into their “member type” to discuss and share their own tips and traps.

ABOUT COAT

The COAT is intended to facilitate liaison and discussion between the heads of tribunals. It will support the development of best practice models and model procedural rules, standards of behaviour and conduct for members and increased capacity for training and support for members.
