Justice Cameron Macaulay
Judge of Appeal at Supreme Court of Victoria
Cameron Macaulay was appointed in 2022 as a Judge of Appeal in the Supreme Court of Victoria after serving as a trial judge of that Court from 2010. Before being appointed as a judge Cameron had practised as a barrister at the Victorian Bar since 1983, taking silk in 2003. In the later years of his practice as counsel he worked substantially in commercial law and insurance with an emphasis on professional indemnity matters.
During his 11 years as a trial judge Cameron worked primarily in the Common Law Division hearing civil jury trials as well as judge-only trials in a wide range of matters. He also regularly rotated into the Criminal Law Division where he presided over numerous criminal trials. In his three years as a permanent member of the Court of Appeal Cameron heard appeals across many fields of law.
Cameron retired at the end of 2024 and lives on a small acreage near the Surf Coast in Victoria. In his retirement, Cameron continues to be an active participant in the Judicial College of Victoria’s judgment writing program.
