Judge Martin Treadwell 
Chair, Immigration and Protection Tribunal, New Zealand
Martin is a District Court Judge and the Chair of the Immigration and Protection Tribunal in New Zealand.
After a number of years in practice as a barrister and solicitor, particularly specialising in human rights, refugee and immigration law, Martin was appointed to the Refugee Status Appeals Authority in 1995, and also to the Residence Review Board and the Removal Review Authority in 1998. In 2008, Martin was also appointed as Deputy Presiding Member of the Deportation Review Tribunal. On the creation of the Immigration and Protection Tribunal in November 2010, he was appointed Deputy Chair, a position which he held until 2021, when he was appointed Chair.
Since 2016, Martin has been a member of the Executive of the International Association of Refugee and Migration Judges (currently its Secretary) and is the immediate past president of the Asia Pacific Chapter of the Association. He was a member of the January 2015 UNHCR Expert Roundtable on Credibility, in Budapest and the 1017 Expert Roundtable on Family Unity, in Brussels. He has been a speaker and trainer in refugee and migration law in many jurisdictions.
Martin is co-author of “Appeals to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal: Best Practice” (CLE, 2013) and “A Structured Approach to the Decision Making Process in Refugee and Other International Protection Claims” (IARMJ, 2016).
