David Wenitong is a Kabi Kabi man from South East Queensland and an Australian South Sea Islander, a descendant of a Kanaka with ties to Ambrym Island in Vanuatu.
David studied law at Central Queensland University while working as a Court Support Officer at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ATSILS) in Central Queensland.
David has worked extensively in regional and remote areas across Queensland and his professional background includes roles as a Restorative Justice Conference Convenor with the Department of Youth Justice, a solicitor at ATSILS, an Independent Patient Rights Advisor (IPRA) with Queensland Health and an Indigenous Advocate/Senior Solicitor with Queensland Advocacy for Inclusion (QAI).
In February 2023, David was appointed as a Full Time Regional Legal Member of Queensland’s Mental Health Review Tribunal (MHRT).
David has also contributed extensively to not for profit community organisations, including Darumbal Community Youth Services, the Mental Health Lived Experience Peak Queensland, the Qld Indigenous Family Violence Legal Service, and the Queensland Law Society Reconciliation and First Nations Advancement Committee. He has also held sessional roles as a mediator with the Central Queensland Dispute Resolution Centre and as a community member of the Parole Board Queensland. David is currently a board member of The Benevolent Society.
David was recently selected to attend the Waitangi Judicial Engagement Program held at Waitangi, Aotearoa New Zealand, from 3–5 February 2026. This program was delivered with the support of COAT in conjunction with Tribunals Aotearoa / COAT NZ, as part of the commemoration of the legacy of Graeme Neate AM.
