Since 1978, at Macquarie University, I have studied, taught, and researched in functional linguistics, a data driven, empirically based theory of texts across diverse social contexts. My research has encompassed aspects of psychiatry, oncology, politics, surgical safety, scientific argument (especially in neuroscience) and issues at law. The ‘tools of analysis’ have been drawn from British linguistics which emphasises how grammar provides us with specific choices for creating social actions, and for maintaining our participation in our culture and community. The study of literature provided me with useful strategies in dealing with complex and latent effects in language, and these effects figured prominently in cases – eg. the Cronulla riots and the diaries of Kathleen Folbigg.

My research collaborations have been funded by many institutions. Consequently, I have worked in Singapore; Japan; China; East Timor; Canada; and Indonesia; as well as in hospitals across Sydney.
