Managed data – trusted research: an introduction to Research Data Management

Audience: Researchers and higher degree research students who are, or will be, managing data or primary materials in their research.

Workshop length: half-day

Overview: Good research data management is a vital component of research practice. Data used to shape the arguments and outcomes of your research should be stored and managed well throughout your project and (where possible) shared with others upon article or thesis publication.  This enables verification of research findings and the re-use of data in future research.  This workshop will introduce participants to best practice in data management and provide an opportunity to network with others.

Topics covered:

• Introduction to research data management;
• How to manage your ‘working data’: data storage infrastructure, backup, file naming and sharing;
• Making your data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable): standards for describing and publishing data, linking data to other research outputs, supporting machine readability of data and licensing your data;
• Managing personal and sensitive data;
• Data Management Plans

Learning outcomes: Upon completion of the workshop, participants will have learned best practice tips and tricks in managing research data from collection through to publication. A certificate of completion is included.
